About Wireless Motion Detectors?

* Wireless motion detectors have become popular among home security systems by providing an effective security measure. A wireless motion detector is a device that uses electronic sensors or mechanisms to detect motion. The device then alerts the user with the help of a connected component in a form of an alarm or camera system. A wireless motion detector can only pick up motion that is within its field of view. The devices can be set to trigger wither when motion starts or when it stops. Other than home security systems, motion detectors are becoming popular in public restrooms attached to automatic toilets, sinks and soap/towel dispensers. In this article, we will learn more about the technology behind wireless motion detectors.

Types:

* There are two different types of wireless motion detectors: active and passive. The technology used in active motion detectors includes radar, ultrasonic waves or photo sensors. It works by measuring disruption to a continuous beam of light. Active sensors release the light, sound or microwave into the surrounding atmosphere to sense changes in the environment. These types of sensors are mainly found in malls, grocery stores and shops in their automatic doors and cameras.
* Passive wireless motion detectors are the ones that are found in home security systems. Infrared technology is used to detect motion without the device releasing anything into the environment. Instead, the device notices changes in the temperatures of objects and people entering into the area within the detector's field of view.

Evolution:

* Passive and active wireless motion detectors replaced the ultrasonic, or acoustical, type used in the past. The problem with the earlier models was with detecting the different types of intruders. People were frustrated with their security system being set off by their pets. New sensors are calibrated to determine the type of energy or the degree of temperature that is radiated from a human compared to that of an animal.

Future:

* Many wireless motion detectors are moving toward dual technology instead of being simply active or passive. This new type of sensor combines the microwave and infrared signals in the active and passive types, respectively, to better guarantee the accuracy of alarms. A frequency of 10GHz of active microwave signals is bounced around the room until it sticks to fixed objects. This happens in repetitive intervals of motion until the environment changes and a motion is detected. Then using the infrared signals, the change in the environment is accessed based on temperatures to determine if the intruder is human.

Problems:

* The ability of wireless motion detectors is only as powerful as their placement. The problem that many homeowners face is with the decision to place the motion detectors by any door on the main level of the home. This method is only effective if intruders enter the home only thorough these doors. There is the added risk that the intruder can enter and exit the home through windows, garage doors or patios. For the security system to be thoroughly effective, the wireless motion detectors need to be placed in an area that houses big-ticket items such as electronics and jewelry.

Installation:

* When purchasing a home security system, most companies such as ADT install the equipment for the client. However, many do-it-yourself homeowners find financial benefits in installing wireless motion detectors themselves. The process is simple and only requires the basic tools.
* The first thing that needs to be done is mapping out the placement of the motion detectors. Find the areas that would benefit from the detectors. The main power needs to be switched off to avoid risk of electrocution while installing the detectors. Attach the sensors to a power source in the areas that you mapped out previously. Make sure that they are positioned in a way to detect the widest range of motion possible. Remove the sensors and install the fixtures, then reattach the sensors to the fixtures. Restore the main power and wait for the base to be completely powered up. The wireless detectors need to be connected to the base through a wireless signal at this point. Read the manual that came with the wireless motion detectors for instructions on how to do this. All units are different. After everything is connected, test it to make sure it is working properly.
